About Nakuru

Country-house Kenya on the Rift Valley's western wall

Rolling farmland and flamingo lakes around Nakuru, home to grand country houses from another era.

Beyond Nakuru town, the land climbs toward the western edge of the Great Rift Valley — farming country of long views, extinct volcanoes and colonial-era estates. Lake Nakuru National Park is famous for its flamingos and one of the best places in Kenya to see both black and white rhino, while the wider region takes in Lake Elmenteita, Menengai Crater and the Londiani forests.

Our base here is Deloraine, a grand Edwardian country house on a 3,500-acre estate at 6,000 feet — polo lawns, log fires and riding country in every direction.

Getting there

Allow around four hours by road from Nairobi on the A104 via Nakuru. Private flights can land at the Gogar airstrip, a few minutes from Deloraine.
